On October 20, 2020, within the framework of the second day of the UN Week at UWED, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN Bakhtiyor Ibragimov delivered an online lecture “Uzbekistan and the UN: New Opportunities for Cooperation”.

The senior representative of Uzbekistan to the UN began his speech with a brief history of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN. He noted that our country has been effectively cooperating with the UN since its accession.

During his speech, B.Ibragimov spoke in detail about the initiatives put forward by the head of our state Sh.Mirziyoyev at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. He noted that in order to implement such proposals as the Development of an International Code of Voluntary Commitments of States in the Event of Pandemics under the auspices of the United Nations, the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Transport and Communications under the auspices of the United Nations to open a regional center for the development of relations, to hold an international forum “Central Asia at the crossroads of world civilizations” in ancient Khiva in cooperation with UNESCO, to create a permanent committee at the UN to listen to the concerns of the Afghan people, and special road maps have been developed. It was noted that in this direction, together with the relevant ministries and departments, a thorough work is being carried out on the basis of specific plans.

B.Ibragimov told in detail that for the first time in history at the UN General Assembly Uzbekistan was elected to the Human Rights Council by a majority of votes for a three-year term. He noted that the process was very difficult and that the National Center for Human Rights and the Uzbek TV and Radio Company worked fruitfully together to accomplish this task. It was noted with satisfaction that this will serve to further strengthen the image of the renewed Uzbekistan, and also become another achievement of Uzbek diplomacy.

During his speech, B.Ibragimov noted that the format of the consultative meeting of the heads of Central Asian states is widely supported in the UN, and is also welcomed by diplomatic representatives at the UN. It was also noted that the diplomatic efforts of Uzbekistan to establish peace in Afghanistan were highly appreciated by the United Nations.

At the end of the lecture, online participants received detailed answers to all their questions. The senior diplomat shared with university students his experience about the qualities of an professional diplomat. He recommended regularly reading the fundamental works of great diplomats such as G.Kissinger, Z.Brzezinski and D.Friedman.
