On September 16-17, an online international scientific-practical conference "The impact of the pandemic on Central Asia: initial lessons, coronacrisis and prospects for transformation" organized by the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with the University of World Economy and Diplomacy and the UNDP will be held. The event partner is also the international project of the British Global Challenges Research Fund’s "COMPASS" international project which is coordinated by the Universities of Kent and Cambridge in a consortium with the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (Uzbekistan), Belarusian State University (Belarus), Tajik National University (Tajikistan) and ADA University (Azerbaijan) will be the partner of the event. The conference will be attended by representatives of government and public structures, academic and expert-analytical circles from 18 countries of the world.

During the conference, participants will discuss topical issues of the pandemic, the initial lessons learned, recommendations for the countries of Central Asia on how to solve the coronacrisis and improve global and regional preparedness for such emergencies. Obviously, no country in the world will be able to ensure its own security and sustainable economic development by suppressing the coronavirus only on its territory while the pandemic continues in neighbouring countries and other parts of the planet.

The coronavirus pandemic has thrown the world into disarray. However, it also made it very clear that the Central Asian states have come a long way since their independence. For every nation in the world, the coronavirus has become a litmus test for capacity and competence, and despite many challenges, regional responses indicate that most of these countries have developed the necessary capacity.

At the same time, the pandemic has demonstrated the degree of irreversible interdependence between all states. We need to learn to harness the opportunities provided by globalization and international synergy, while exploring ways to counter transnational threats. Governments, international organizations and expert communities need to create mechanisms for the survival of humankind in the face of such global challenges through constant interaction, dialogue and confidence building. There is an increase in the objective demand for joint efforts of the international community to overcome the coronacrisis.

The international community draws attention to the role of science and international academic cooperation in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The scientific community can become a strong support for states in the fight against this problem. One of the key conditions for success in managing such crisis situations is close cooperation between scientists and experts from different countries to find common and effective responses and solutions to pressing problems. The creation of new academic and expert consortia of international cooperation dedicated to sustainable development and prevention of global crises will become even more popular after the pandemic.

This conference will contribute to the development of a constructive international agenda that takes into account the national interests of the states of the region in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and its negative consequences. It is vitally important to trace the interconnection of the new strategic situation in Central Asia in the context of the current global coronacrisis, outlining the prospects for interaction and mutual assistance in stabilizing the situation and achieving regional sustainable development.
