On June 25, 2020, Economic Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the University of World Economy and Diplomacy have conducted a webinar on the topic: "Economic development in theory and practice: current issues and contemporary aspects".

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan of April 5, 2018 No.PP-3654, which emphasizes promotion of ‘economic diplomacy’, Economic Diplomacy Directorate have planned a series of events directed at improving the skills of employees in this aspect and in relevant issues of global economy, trade and innovation development while reforming the system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic.

In the view of the aforementioned, exchange of views, insights and suggestions among scientific experts and practitioners in the field of economic diplomacy, economic integration, transport corridors, exports and investment attraction and strengthening the professional interaction of practitioners with leading scientists of the country have been defined as the main objectives of the webinar.

Professors of UWED and Heads of structural divisions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan have attended the webinar. Namely, Professor I.R. Mavlyanov, Doctor of Economics, provided a speech on the topic of ‘Improvement of training and research of specialists in the field of economic diplomacy’. During the speech, Professor paid an emphasis to the significance of in-depth study of the pillars and priority areas of economic diplomacy.

Professor N. Sirozhiddinov, Doctor of Economics, provided a speech on the topic ‘Uzbekistan's membership in economic integration associations’, where he presented a detailed insight on Uzbekistan's accession process to the Eurasian Economic Community, in the view of current economic transformations taking place all around the world.

T. Dergacheva, Ph.D. in Economics, provided a speech on the topic ‘Attracting foreign investments within the framework of improving the country's banking system at contemporary stage’, during which the author has mentioned areas which are highly prioritized in the view of the development of the banking and financial system.

 The webinar discussed current issues and trends in economic development. In particular, activation of economic diplomacy in the new realities and development of novice innovative approaches to further develop Uzbekistan’s foreign economic interests have been underlined to achieve effective realize tasks set in these spheres.

During the webinar, it was noted that the world economy may be on the verge of an economic crisis in the light of Covid pandemic situation. According to forecasts by United Nations, estimates from damage resulting from pandemic may account for $8.5 trillion, while the growth of global economy is forecasted to decrease by 3.2%, signifying the worst figures since the Great Depression of ‘30s.

In this respect, strong emphasis has been paid to combination of theoretical and practical insights and skills to come up with new proposals.
