An article entitled “Why teaching and researching the EU in Central Asia?” by Khaydarali Yunusov, PhD in International Law, docent of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy has been published on the European Union – Central Asia network platform.

In this article, author explains the importance of teaching and researching the EU related disciplines, particularly, the European Union Law and shares his personal experiences. According to UWED`s expert, there are two main reasons of teaching and researching the EU Law in Uzbekistan.

First of all, for those who will be involved in their professional career in exchanges with EU member States, it is necessary to know the rules of the European Single Market and the decision-making processes, and not only rules on relationships with third countries. Only if you understand the decision-making processes you can have an influence on the final decisions that are relevant for you.

Secondly, the EU is not only one of the economically most advanced regions of the world and an extremely important trading partner. It is also a historically unique model for the integration of national economies into a single market based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. The overall result has been peace and wellbeing of the people in the Union for many decades. Being the most sophisticated regional integration system, the EU offers a rich experience from custom union to political integration. Studying this experience will be helpful to find out adequate forms of institutional cooperation in Central Asia.

It is worthy to note that cooperation with the EU and its member-states is considered as one of the foreign policy priorities of Uzbekistan. By virtue of it, within teaching programmes of UWED, the unique university in Uzbekistan specialized in preparing specialists in the field of international relations and diplomacy, teaching the courses related to EU economy, law and politics has been successfully implemented.
