NUPACE Prospectus 2019-2020
It is with pleasure that this Office is able to forward to you the 2019-2020 prospectus for the Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange (NUPACE). We look forward to embarking upon or continuing our exchange relationship with you over the coming year.
As is customary, I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to news and revisions pertaining to the NUPACE program. I appreciate your understanding of the following points:
1) NUPACE Application/Nomination Method: Students intending to participate in an exchange at Nagoya University are requested to apply online at https://nupace.iee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/apply/.
NUPACE does not require that students send their application materials via postal mail.
With regard to autumn 2019 admission, the relevant offices at our partner institutions will have already received a request to submit their list of nominees online no later than March 1, 2019. If you have not received such a request, please contact the NUPACE Office at nupace@iee.nagoya-u.ac.jp.
Nomination and application submission deadlines for AY 2019-2020 are as follows:

2) Eligibility Criteria: Unless they attend/have attended universities where English is the language of instruction, non-native English speakers who wish to participate in the English-language curriculum of NUPACE/Global 30 (G30) International Programs should possess, at minimum, TOEFL iBT 79, TOE1C 780, IELTS 6.0, CEFR B2, CET-6 450, or the equivalent. Students enrolled in partner institutions in Scandinavia, Germany. Austria, Hong Kong and Singapore are exempt from this English language requirement. Alternatively, students intending to take regular university courses instructed in Japanese are required to possess N1/level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). A pass at level N2 is not considered sufficient for registering for regular courses in Japanese, although it does satisfy the eligibility requirements of the Intensive Program in Advanced Japanese.
With regard to academic achievement, NUPACE requires all applicants to possess a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0, or the equivalent.
3) Exchange Student Numbers: in keeping with the objective of Nagoya University to internationalize at a more extensive level, NUPACE has over the last few years relaxed student intake restrictions. However, housing capacity has started to show signs of strain and, accordingly, we request that partner institutions wishing to send more than three students for admission in any one semester, kindly consult with this Office, in order to confirm, 1) that space is available, and 2) that exchange student numbers do not exceed the quotas provided for in our exchange agreements.
4) Programme Content: Nagoya University provides a comprehensive array of courses in English and Japanese, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Provided that they meet the requisite academic and language requirements, exchange students are eligible to register for courses in the following programmes:
- Nagoya University NUPACE Programme: http://nupace.iee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/en/academic/syllabus.html.
- G30 International Programmes: http://admissions.g30.nagoya-u.ac.jp/undergraduate/
- Regular Courses taught in Japanese: http://www.nagoya-u.ac.jp/about-nu/org/sch-list/index.html
Please be advised that students majoring in Japanese Language/Japan Area Studies may apply for the one-year Intensive Programme in Advanced Japanese (programme for NIKKENSEI). Refer to the enclosed prospectus or, for a more detailed description of course content,
http://jp.ilc.iee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/ja/japanese/special/ipaj.html (Japanese)
5) Scholarships: All students with a GPA in excess of 3.1. or the equivalent, are eligible to be nominated by Nagoya University for a Student Exchange Support Program (JASSO) scholarship, where such scholarships have been allocated to this University. The system is nomination-based, and students are not required to fill out any separate application materials. Please be advised that JASSO scholarships are competitive, and that students who receive the scholarship generally possess a GPA in excess of 3.5 on a scale of 4.0. Scholarship provisions comprise a monthly stipend of ¥80,000, usually for the duration of the exchange.
6) Accommodation: In principle, all NUPACE students are guaranteed university housing, the cost of which varies between ¥25,000~¥40,000 per month, inclusive of utilities, depending on the type of accommodation allocated. As of April 2019, a new student dormitory, International Residence - Daiko, will open, and a large proportion of NUPACE students are expected to be housed therein. This dormitory is a short commute via subway from Higashiyama campus (Nagoya University’s main campus). Please note that NUPACE will automatically apply for accommodation on students’ behalf.
Computer Access: Students in possession of their own (preferably wireless enabled) laptops are strongly recommended to bring these to Japan. Needless to say, all Nagoya University students, including NUPACE students, have access to computers running on the Microsoft Windows operating system located on campus. However, university computer facilities do not offer a twenty-four hour service.
Prior to nomination, please ensure that nominees meet the following pre-requisites:
- GPA: Minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.
- Language Proficiency for non-native English Speakers:
TOEFL iBT: 79, IELTS overall band: 6.0, TOEIC: 780, CEFR: B2, CET-6: 450 OR JLPT: N1/ Level 1.
*Students enrolled in universities in Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as students majoring in English, or who are being / have been educated in English are exempt from this requirement.
Application deadline: March 15, 2019
